"We are the factory." When you source online, almost everyone says it. Some are telling the truth. Many are trading companies. Here's how to tell the difference — and why it matters.
What's the difference?
- A factory owns the machines and makes the product.
- A trading company takes your order and places it with a factory. They add a margin for their work.
Is a trading company bad?
Not always. A good trading company can:
- Speak better English and respond faster
- Handle many products in one order
- Manage small orders a factory would refuse
But there are downsides:
- Higher price (an extra margin)
- Slower answers on technical questions
- Less control — they may switch factories without telling you
The key is to know who you're dealing with, so you can decide with open eyes.
6 ways to check
- Ask for a live video walk of the production floor. Not photos — live. Ask them to show a machine making your type of product.
- Check the business licence. A factory's scope usually includes manufacturing or production, not only trading.
- Ask detailed process questions. "What wall thickness do you use?" "Which machine makes this part?" Factories answer quickly. Traders often say "let me check."
- Look at their product range. A factory usually specialises. If they sell bags, electronics and toys, they're probably a trader.
- Ask for the factory address and check the map. An office tower in a city centre is a clue.
- Visit, or send someone. Nothing replaces standing on the floor.
Red flags (factory or trader)
- They say yes to everything without questions
- The price is far below every other quote
- They won't show the production floor
- They want 100% payment up front
- Photos look like stock images
When a trading company makes sense
- Your order is small and spread across many products
- You need someone to manage several factories for you
- You value fast communication over the lowest price
The bottom line
Factory or trader — both can work. What hurts is not knowing. Check before you pay, and you'll avoid most of the surprises first-timers face.
